EUROPE DEMONSTRATES ITS LEADERSHIP IN 5G AND 6G AT 5G FORUM 24

26/04/2024
  • The European Commission will participate in the seventh edition of the 5G Forum, represented by Agustín Díaz-Pinés, Deputy Head of the European Commission’s Future Connectivity Systems Unit.
  • Associations such as the EBU (European Broadcasting Union), represented by Elena Puigrefagut; or the 6G-IA, represented by Carles Antón-Haro, will complete the European agenda.
  • The 5G Forum 24 will also include multinationals from Germany and Finland, in addition to 12 Spanish entities and the three main operators: MASORANGE, Telefónica and Vodafone.

European multinationals, operators, institutions and associations will be well represented at the seventh edition of the 5G Forum, “Where 5G leaders meet”, an event that will be held from May 6 to 10 in hybrid format, starting with two face-to-face sessions at the Nissan Cartuja Auditorium in Seville on Monday May 6 and Tuesday May 7, and will continue with three virtual sessions on May 8, 9 and 10.

Top-level European representation

The 5G Forum 24 will feature Agustín Díaz-Pinés, Deputy Head of the Future Connectivity Systems Unit at the European Commission, responsible for policy and strategic developments in 5G and 6G communication networks as part of the Digital Decade strategy to foster European investment and innovation.

Díaz-Pinés will present the European Commission’s White Paper on the future of digital infrastructure in Europe, linking it to the 5G and 6G strategy.

European associations such as the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) or the 6G-IA will complete an exclusive agenda. On the one hand, Elena Puigrefagut, Senior Project Manager at the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), will develop everything related to 5G-EMERGE, “a hybrid network ecosystem based on 5G, and centered on satellites, optimized for media distribution”. This is a project led by the EBU-UER (European Broadcasting Union), largely funded by ESA (the European Space Agency), under its ARTES program, which aims to “enable service providers to deliver video streaming services at scale and cost-effectively, while enhancing the user experience across a wide range of use cases.”

For his part, Carles Antón-Haro, 6G-IA Board Member, Chair of the 6G-IA Trials Working Group and Director of European Programs and Industrial Contracts at the Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC), will outline the EU and U.S. R&D roadmap within the six areas of collaboration for 6G networks and services. The European Union and the United States reaffirmed their commitment to cooperate on the development of future 6G networks during the fourth ministerial meeting of the Trade and Technology Council (TTC) in May 2023.

Finland’s Nokia and Germany’s Rohde & Schwarz will also contribute their European vision.

Network as Code concept and Nokia 5GNaCar project

Jaime Ruiz, Innovation Manager at Nokia, will share some of the latest news and advances of the Finnish multinational, such as the Network as Code (NaC) concept or the 5GNaCar, “a research project that takes a step forward in the new functions supported by NaC”. Aimed at optimizing performance and user experience, Network as Code is the “extreme simplification of network capabilities” to enable applications to dynamically change the network.

NaC allows the “construction of a new business and technological framework”, according to Jaime Ruiz, which in turn facilitates the inclusion of developers and the ecosystem of technological partners, something fundamental for the creation of value.

Rohde & Schwarz and NTN mobile devices

Germán Martín, Applications Engineer at Germany’s Rohde & Schwarz, will share with attendees some solutions for NTN (Non-Terrestrial Network) mobile device measurements with the aim of bringing mobile connectivity everywhere, even to isolated regions that do not have access to conventional terrestrial networks. He will also talk about the 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project), a collaboration of groups of telecommunications associations.

With extensive experience working with 5G terminal testing techniques, the technical support manager for mobile communications solutions will develop one of the major network issues on the planet, such as terrestrial network coverage, as today, “less than 20% of the entire planet Earth has terrestrial coverage deployed”.

Spain: 12 reference entities in 5G technology

Up to 12 Spanish entities and organizations will also meet at the 5G Forum 24: Netmetrix, OFG, Vicomtech, Wavecontrol, Axion, UMA -University of Malaga- Gradiant, Hispasat, Gsertel, AI Funded, Opossum and Gamma Solutions, which are references in the 5G world and will tell the latest advances in this technology showing the way to 6G.

MASORANGE, Telefónica and Vodafone, at the 5G Forum 2024

The three main operators will talk about their latest advances in 5G technology. On behalf of MASORANGE, Miguel Ángel Victoria, Head of IoT B2B, and Angélica Sánchez, Director of Business and Marketing at Orange, will explain the advantages of this technology in both the residential and business markets.

Telefónica will be present with a session with the participation of Juan Cambeiro, Head of 5G customer projects, and Ángel Álamo, Head of LAN and 5G Marketing, which will review the present and future of “one of the most transformative technologies that have been deployed in recent years”. David Artuñedo, Head of Future Networks Lab at TID, will also give a presentation on the Future Networks Lab projects in Andalusia.

Vodafone will also have its place in the 5G Forum 24 with the presence of César Antón, Network as a Platform Design and Development Manager at Vodafone Business. With extensive experience in APIs, César Antón will address the standardization of API networks, an intermediary between two systems that allows one application to communicate with another and request specific data or actions.

The 5G Forum has established itself as a reference forum in the technology sector, as it is a unique showcase with a multidisciplinary vocation to publicize each year the use cases and success stories of operators, companies, universities and institutions.

All the presentations of this and previous editions can be viewed through ‘The Observatory‘, the digital platform of Medina Media Events, where all the interventions will be available 24/365 for on-demand consumption, like Netflix, but free of charge.

The seventh edition of the 5G Forum is organized by Medina Media Events and is supported by MASORANGE, Telefónica, Red Hat, Netmetrix, Huawei, ZTE, Mavenir, OFG, Vicomtech, Wavecontrol, Axión, the University of Málaga, Viavi Solutions, Nokia, Rohde & Schwarz, Gradiant, Hispasat, Gsertel, AI Funded, Opossum and Gamma Solutions, among others.
