TELEFÓNICA, VODAFONE, ORANGE, CELLNEX AND MINSAIT, IN THE 5G FORUM

12/04/2021

The agenda for the second day of the 5G Forum 2021 (www.5gforum.es), to be held on May 4, 5 and 6, will provide a first-hand, comprehensive and panoramic view of the 5G plans of the telecoms Telefónica, Vodafone, Orange, Cellnex and Minsait.

The keynote address on the second day of the event, Wednesday, May 5, will be given by Antonio Fernández-Paniagua, from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, which is headed by Vice President Nadia Calviño.

Fernández-Paniagua will speak at a key moment to analyze the situation and actions in the frequency bands identified in the European Union as priorities for the development of 5G: the 700 MHz band, the 3.5 GHz band and the 26 GHz band, one of the most anticipated topics in 2021 in the telecommunications sector: the auctions of the 5G frequencies.

Fernández-Paniagua will be followed by Jorge Alberto Jiménez, president of Axión, the Seville-based telecom operator that just six months ago was acquired from an Australian group by Asterion, the leading Spanish private equity fund dedicated to telecommunications.

Axion currently manages more than 5,000 service points distributed throughout Spain, in 635 towers. In addition, in 2018 the business expanded to fiber hand in hand with Enagás through Axent to develop and commercialize its joint radio and fiber infrastructure. Axent uses more than 4,600 km of fiber throughout Spain.

The 5G Forum confirmed today that the three main telecoms (Telefónica, Vodafone and Orange) will also be present at the fourth edition of Spain’s main 5G-specific event.

Mercedes Fernández, from Telefónica; Carlos Becker, from Vodafone; and Alfredo Vallejo, from Orange, will be the speakers who will share their visions and 5G pilots with the attendees.

Minsait, an Indra company, will join this new edition. Its executives, David Serrano and Daniel García, will present their vision of 5G in the industry and some use cases.

For its part, Hispasat, with José Luis Serrano, director of innovation and product strategy, will be in charge of highlighting the “perfect alliance” between 5G and the satellite to bring this new technology to every corner of Spain.

In addition, the second day of the 5G Forum 2021 will offer attendees an extensive tour of Spain to learn about some of the best 5G pilot projects being worked on in Andalusia, Catalonia, the Valencian Community, Extremadura, Galicia and Madrid.

Telefónica will offer a panel to discuss 5G private networks in Andalusia. And then the 5G Forum agenda will stop in Malaga with Pedro Merino, director of the 5Genesis project and professor at the University of Malaga, to show, along with David Artuñedo, from Telefónica, the “5G innovation sandbox” in the capital of the Costa del Sol, in whose National Digital Content Pole the first two editions of the 5G Forum were held.

Cellnex, one of the main sponsors of the event, will explain in detail in a panel the 5G pilot it is leading in Catalonia. Francisco Javier Marcos, director of Cellnex Telecom’s Innovation Unit, will coordinate the panel discussion on the flagship 5G project of the IBEX-35 star company in 2020, which has increased its value by a factor of 5 since it went public in 2015.

Currently, Cellnex Telecom is the leading European operator of wireless telecommunications infrastructures, with a portfolio of 128,000 sites, 75,000 of them already in the portfolio and the rest in the process of closing or planned deployments until 2028. Cellnex operates in Spain, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Ireland, Poland, Portugal, Denmark, Austria and Sweden.

For his part, Josep Martí, CEO of Nearby Computing, a startup initiative of the National Supercomputing Center and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), and participated by Cellnex, Lenovo and Elewit, will tell in the 5G Forum 2021 its advances in edge computing and 5G, linking networks and apps.

Another university also present on this second day of the 5G Forum will be the Carlos III University of Madrid. Its Professor of Signal Theory and Communications, Ana García Armada, will present the Team Up 5G project and will talk about radio access network techniques for 5G, considering ultra-dense mobile networks as a key ingredient of mobile networks and their evolution.

The 5G pilot in Extremadura will also be the protagonist in the fourth edition of the 5G Forum, by Gamma Solutions, represented by Carlos Ortega, director of solutions. The Extremaduran company will also talk about the potential of 5G technology for its application in the public and private sector.

Finally, the general manager of Strategy of Televés, José Luis Fernández Carnero, will present everything that the Galician teleco is currently doing in terms of 5G.

The 5G Forum has already opened its registration for attendees with an agenda whose first day will be attended by multinationals from the United States, Europe and Asia, such as Ericsson, Cisco, Qualcomm, Nokia, Huawei, Mavenir, ZTE, Rohde&Schwarz, Keysight Technologies, Omdia,… as well as representatives of the European Commission, the Government of Spain, the National 5G Observatory and several Spanish Universities.

Despite extending its agenda one more day, from two to three, and that in this edition there will be a total of more than 40 presentations and talks, registrations will maintain the same price as last year (60.50 euros, VAT included), when it was already held virtually due to the pandemic.

The sessions will start at 9:00 and end at 15:00, from which time the schedule will be repeated to have morning, afternoon and evening hours (thinking of Latin America), in addition to all the talks will be available individually on the Virtual 5G Forum platform at the end of each one. In addition, the webinar offered by Keysight Technologies will start at 15:00 on Wednesday, May 5.

The 5G Forum is organized by Medina Media Events and brings together annually since 2018 the main players of this new technology. This year it will be inaugurated by the Director General of Telecommunications, Maite Arcos, who will explain the Strategy and the 5G Impulse Plan that between now and 2025 will dedicate 2,000 million euros of European funds.

One of the great novelties of this year’s edition, with respect to the 5G Forum 2020, is that in addition to the presentations, sponsors will have the opportunity to conduct question and answer sessions with attendees and invited customers, demos, webinars and One2One video meetings, with the new platform created by Medina Media Events and already launched at the 4K Summit 2020, the main global meeting on Ultra High Definition (UHD), and the Global Extenda last November.
