The fifth edition of the 5G Forum kicks off with the city of Seville as the protagonist

09/05/2022

The greatest experts worldwide and the most relevant companies will be protagonists from today and throughout the week -May 9 to 13- in the fifth edition of the 5G Forum to talk and reflect on 5G and show us the advances of this new technology.

The 5G Forum has arrived in the city of Seville for the first time, after holding its first two editions in Malaga and the next two virtually. Large telecoms, multinationals, municipalities, universities and experts will reflect during this week on the current state of 5G and its future. This makes the city of Seville the worldwide focus of this new technology. This edition is completed with 5 days, the largest in history. It will be a hybrid format that will include, in addition to the day held today at FIBES, four virtual days from May 10 to 13.

The Mayor of Seville at the 5G Forum

The day began with the arrival of Antonio Muñoz, Mayor of Seville, at Fibes, and his visit to the exhibition area, where he was able to see first-hand the exclusive demonstrations and use cases of the world’s leading 5G companies .

“It is an honor to arrive at the Seville Congress Palace and read in great detail 5G Forum, Seville capital of 5G”, says the Mayor of Seville.

Subsequently, the mayor has been in charge of opening the 5G Forum 2022 in the auditorium.

“ We aspire to be a benchmark in terms of digital transformation and innovation. We want to be a smart city and become a reference in 5G technology in Andalusia and in Spain”.

Next, Antonio Fernández-Paniagua, Deputy Director General of Planning and Management of the Radioelectric Spectrum of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, has carried out an analysis of the 5G map of Spain in this 2022.

“Promoting the deployment of 5G technology in our country is one of the priorities of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan and the 5G Cybersecurity Law approved in April this year is one of the reform milestones included in the plan”, indicates Fernandez-Paniagua.

It should be noted that on this opening day, renowned experts have offered unpublished reports on 5G and 6G at a national and global level. María Rúa, Senior Research Director, Media and Entertainment, Technology Fellow at Omdia, offered attendees the exclusive report on 5G in the world.

“In 2022 there will be 700 million new 5G subscribers, a total of 1.3 billion subscribers, where China once again leads the list and Spain is in the top 5 in number of subscribers in Europe. In 2026 it is expected that the 5G connections will reach 4.8 billion, that is, 40% of global subscriptions will be 5G, although 4G will continue to lead.

Next, Narcís Cardona, Professor at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, commented on the situation of 5G and 6G in our country. Cardona has commented that this 2022 is a very important year in relation to 5G technology.

“5G has achieved a faster technology than the human senses themselves, enabling a large number of new possibilities such as, for example, autonomous vehicles”, explains the professor during his presentation.

Finally, Juan Olivares, Business Development Director for Europe at OnMobile, spoke about 5G and the Gaming revolution. Olivares has made us reflect on how 5G technology is becoming one of the key disruptors that is impacting and transforming the user experience and the companies that make up the gaming industry.

“5G is going to give us mobility and the experience of playing with virtual reality and augmented reality, creating new forms of play that are not known to date, focused on multisensory experiences,” says the OnMobile manager.

5G Demonstrations at FIBES

Among the novelties of this first day, it is worth highlighting the demonstration area, where large multinationals such as Nokia, American Tower, Orange, Telefónica, UHD Spain, Capgemini Engineering, Advantech, Keysight Technologies, VIAVI Solutions, ATEME or Tesla, among others, have shown visitors its full potential in relation to 5G technology.

Telefónica has presented the Robot Spot Xplorer. A robot dog designed for surveillance and first aid. Go up and down stairs quickly, dodge obstacles and execute learned routes. This robot, inspired by the biomechanics of quadrupedal animals, has 360 vision that allows it to record from different angles.

Orange has presented the development of remotely controlled mobile robots via 5G to carry out inspection and maintenance tasks in critical places, such as railway facilities or electrical infrastructure.

On the other hand, the Nordic multinational Nokia has shown the public at the 5G Forum three use cases called Volcano, Owl and Amethyst.

Volcán is a gamified demonstration of the execution on the 5G network (“offloading”) of artificial intelligence applications applied to extended reality. Users of the demo have had to walk on a dangerous tile path in an erupting volcano, controlling where they are stepping, thanks to the fact that they can see their own body in the virtual experience. Owl is a demonstration on immersive telepresence, which has allowed participants to feel teleported to another place and interact with the people there.

The company Capgemini Engineering has exposed a demo of avatars with people. A 5G 360º augmented assistance solution, focused on industry 4.0. The multinational American Tower has shown a modern digital Mupi that works through 5G technology. This application teaches a business model based on a hybrid support of telecommunications, citizen information and advertising.

The high-end car company Tesla has offered the public the opportunity to enjoy one of its latest electric car models in the exhibition area and request a test drive on site.

For its part, Advantech has shown multiple technologies for the monitoring and control of buildings and other infrastructures, through its IoT hardware and software.

The public has also been able to enjoy impressive UHD (Ultra High Definition) images thanks to UHD Spain.

This opening day has also been very relevant for networking between large multinationals and for continuing to advance in projects related to 5G technology.

Those registered for the 5G Forum 2022 have been able to follow this opening day by streaming and networking through video meetings with speakers and participants, through the virtual platform created by Medina Media Events. The rest of the days of the week – May 10 to 13 – will continue in virtual format with more than 40 sessions that will be broadcast every day on said platform. As soon as they are broadcast for the first time, they are made available to virtual attendees in Video on Demand (SVOD) on the Platform of Medina Media Events, the organizer of the event.

Multinationals, professionals and speakers from countries such as the United States, Japan, Taiwan, Germany, Great Britain, France, Finland, Sweden or Spain participate in the fifth edition of the 5G Forum.

The 5G Forum is a privileged opportunity to publicize the successes of each initiative, each company, each university, each project and each city, in an event of international reference and with a first-class showcase. It is promoted by Sevilla City Office and Fibes. It also has the support of Telefónica, Orange, American Tower, Viavi Solutions, Ericsson, Capgemini Engineering, Qualcomm, Mavenir, Rohde & Schwarz, Keysight Technologies, Netmetrix-Spirent, Cisco, Huawei, ZTE, Malaga City Council, Digital Content Center , Fycma, National 5G Observatory, Cellnex, Advantech, Ateme, TOTEM, Dekra, Televes, Hispasat, Nokia, JVC, Toshiba, Axión, Impulsa Vision RTVE, OFG, Evolved 5G.
