5G FREQUENCY AUCTIONS, HOT TOPIC AT THE 5G FORUM

08/03/2021

The celebration of the fourth edition of the 5GForum in Spain, on May 4, 5 and 6, organized by Medina Media Events and which brings together annually since 2018 the main agents of this new technology, will come at a key moment to analyze the situation and actions in the frequency bands identified in the European Union as priorities for the development of 5G: the 700 MHz band, the 3.5 GHz band, and the 26 GHz band, one of the most anticipated topics in 2021 in the telecommunications sector: the auctions of the 5G frequencies.

The 700 MHz band, with huge commercial and industrial possibilities, has been released in 2020 after public and private broadcasters had to abandon it last year following the new radio spectrum allocation set by the European Commission. The auction of this band was initially scheduled for the summer of 2020, but as a result of the pandemic, the Spanish government informed the European Commission of its postponement to the spring of 2021.

The person in charge of explaining at the 5G Forum the details of the situation and actions in the priority bands for 5G, among which is the 700 MHz band, whose public consultation on the conditions of the tender for it has already been held and is expected to be published in the BOE soon, will be the top expert in Spain in the field, Antonio Fernández-Paniagua, Deputy Director General of Planning and Management of the Radio Spectrum of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, headed by Vice President Nadia Calviño.

Fernández-Paniagua, who will inaugurate the second day of the main 5G-specific event in Spain, will give details of the actions in the 5G priority bands, actions that are included in the measures contemplated in the 5G Technology Promotion Strategy, published on December 1, 2020.

The Director General of Telecommunications, Maite Arcos, will inaugurate the 5GForum to share with all attendees the 5G Strategy and the 5G Impulse Plan, which between now and 2025 will dedicate 2,000 million euros of European funds.

The first day of the 5G Forum 2021, on Tuesday, May 4, will be dedicated to major national and international 5G projects, with the participation of European and national authorities and leading multinationals worldwide, also introducing a global vision of 6G.

The second day, on Wednesday, May 5, will be focused on the advances of 5G and Audiovisual; and the third, on Thursday, May 6, on the pilots that are being developed in Spain by companies and universities.

More than 50 5G research projects are currently being developed in Spain and the most relevant ones will be presented at the 5G Forum, the most important specialized and academic event in Spain on 5G technology, where Spanish companies, multinationals and public institutions present their advances and pilot projects in society on an annual basis.

Another of the great novelties of this year’s edition, with respect to the 5G Forum 2020, is that in addition to the presentations, sponsors will have the opportunity to conduct question and answer sessions with attendees and invited customers, demos, webinars and One2One meetings, with the new platform created by Medina Media Events and already launched at the 4K Summit 2020, the main global meeting on Ultra High Definition (UHD), and the Extenda Global last November.
